Imagine a 5th grade class without a teacher. Most envision spit wads being shot at the ceiling, students running amuck, and teachers from neighboring classrooms rushing to see what all the commotion is about.
This video shows a classroom that makes it through a whole day without an adult to lead the class. In fact, as far as the students are concerned, the teacher is dead. When this is announced at the beginning of the video, the student cheer!
This video is proof of the power of student when they are allowed to work on their own to:
- Solve problems
- Learn new skills
- Collaborate with peers
- Teach one another
The video is also proof that students do not necessarily need an authoritative adult in order to learn. What they really need is a leader, regardless of the age, who will show them how to be lifelong learners. The title of the video, A Day Without A Teacher, may not be the best title because within this classroom, there are many teachers present. They are just 10 or 11 years old.
